World’s first ‘air pollution market’ in Surat chosen as finalist for Earthshot Prize
Researchers affiliated with the Emissions Market Accelerator helped the Indian state of Gujarat design and launch the world's first particulate pollution market. The Print video dives deeper into the project that was also nominated as a finalist for the world’s most prestigious and impactful environmental award, The Earthshot Prize.
An air pollution market is a ‘cap and trade’ scheme to reduce emissions from industries, unlike the current command and control regulations. It was pioneered in Surat by JPAL South Asia and UChicago’s EPIC Centre with Gujarat Pollution Control Board, and is now a finalist for the Earthshot Prize awarded by Prince William.
